New species: A Loxsoma fern whitefly on the underside of a fern frond. Discovering a new species of insect means exciting things for entomol- ogist Nicholas Martin and it's hap- pening right on our doorstep, he says. Birkenhead's Chatswood Reserve is the home of Mr Martin's latest find, the Loxsoma fern whitefly. It was a chance find, Mr Martin says, though once you've got a trained eye it's easy to spot some- thing that might be exciting. His colleague Robert Hoare was looking for caterpillars in the urban reserve when he came across an unusual-looking fern and found whiteflies were living on it. Given Mr Martin's knowledge of whiteflies he took a specimen to him and as soon as Mr Martin saw it he knew it was a real find. The rare fern is called Loxsoma cunninghamii and is only found north of the Waitemata Harbour, Little Barrier Island and Coroman- del Peninsula. Fern whiteflies each have their own preferred fern species on which they breed and live. But discovering a new species is just the beginning, Mr Martin says, because it leads to learning all sorts of things about the creature's life cycle. While insects that eat native plants in a garden might be thought of as pests, they're part of the biodiversity of nature, he says. Now he's retired Mr Martin finds around one new species a year because he has more time to get out and about. His latest project involves putting together online fact sheets about insects found in our urban parks. Chatswood Reserve is just one of these urban parks -- brimming with interesting insects, he says. Sometimes we need to let people know about the small things. And who knows what other unknown species are right on our doorstep.''
