Among the ugly side of the Johnston or John- stone history in Scotland were acts like setting fire to a church and slaugh- tering those trying to escape. They just thought it was their right to go raiding,'' New Zealand Clan Johnston/e Associ- ation commissioner Les Hewett says. People with links to the surname Johnston or Johnstone from all over New Zealand gather this May on the North Shore for the first time. Fighting between the Johnstones and long time foes the Maxwells culminated with the last and bloodiest Scottish battle The Battle of Dryfe Sands of 1593. When King James VI of Scotland became King of England in 1603 he was determined to end the waring between fam- ilies. Many of the clan were shipped to Ulster in North Ireland, were forced to fight for the army in Spain or Ireland or threatened with relo- cation to Virginia, US. Mr Hewett says some dropped the t'' from their name to avoid pun- ishment. The Clan Johnston/e Association has about 120 members and hopes its North Shore meeting will attract new members. Mr Hewett, who is also genealogical officer, encourages people to come along to find out more about their family history. Vast research tools and contacts in New Zea- land and overseas are put to use, he says. The New Zealand Clan Johnston/e Association holds its annual meeting on May 4 from 11am to 4pm at St George's Church in Takapuna.
