North Shore Language School in Wairau Rd, Glenfield has been oper- ating as a language school for 11 years. In addition to offering English classes, NSLS also trains teachers. Trainees receive 12 weeks of extensive train- ing in the theory and practice of teaching, and achieve a Teaching Eng- lish to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) qualification. All trainees gain work experience as an English tutor. This course is popular with both begin- ning teachers and quali- fied teachers looking for further development. Graduates leave the course with two well- recognised teaching qualifications. One is a NZQA qualifi- cation, and the other is the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) from Cam- bridge University, Eng- land. These two quali- fications enable graduates to teach Eng- lish in New Zealand as well as overseas. TheNSLSisaCa m - bridge University pre- testing centre for the Teaching Knowledge Test. Their teacher trainees can participate in the TKT pre-test at the North Shore campus. This allows students to experience the test and to trial future test ques- tions. The pre-tests are marked by Cambridge University and scores are given. This enables trainees and their tutors to identify any strengths and weaknesses so that they can be guided to achieve the highest scores in the TKT. Upon graduating many NSLS students say they developed a passion for teaching during their TESOL course and that it has given them the confidence to consider teaching as a career. The North Shore Language School is located at 122 Wairau Rd, Glenfield on a main bus route and handy to the motorway at Tristram Ave. For enquiries phone David on 442 4500 or visit www.nsls.ac.nz.
