Lengthy walk full of variety EMILY FORD Putting up with cold weather and sore feet on a serious journey of the country is nearly over for Red Lunday de Waal. The Takapuna resident is walking the Te Araroa Trail, a 3000 kilometre walk the length of New Zealand. She’s doing it to raise money for Triple T – Time to Thrive to Stay Alive – a charitable trust that provides fitness and cycling classes. Lunday de Waal kicked off the first leg of the walk in Cape Reinga in early April and is aiming to walk back into Takapuna by May 4. Then, come spring, she plans to complete the rest of the journey to Bluff. ‘‘I was most concerned about having enough water on the trail, how the knees would hold up and how I could brush my teeth well each day,’’ Lunday de Waal says. ‘‘It turns out everything works out fine, you just keep putting one foot in front of the other.’’ Despite the chilly weather and muddy tracks, she’s enjoying the experience. ‘‘It’s wonderful and every day is different,’’ she says. ‘‘When the weather starts packing in that’s when I get apprehensive. When I get cold I get quite vulnerable.’’ Triple T was established by Teau Aiturau to help people get healthy and lose weight. Lunday de Waal met Aiturau at a Bike the Bridge event and was inspired to do something for the trust. She’s hoping to help fund the cost of a purpose-built space for the trust to store donated bikes and equipment. The sky’s the limit, she says, and she’s aiming to raise as much as she can. ‘‘What he’s doing is fantastic and I’m glad to be fundraising for it,’’ she says. Joined by her husband and friends for parts of the route, she’s enjoying be at one with the environment and says the challenging walk is full of variety. ‘‘I absolutely adored Ninety Mile Beach, it was over too soon. ‘‘I spent a day with my father who passed away last year. That was very special for me, I walked with him along the beach the whole day. I had a lot of tears.’’ ❚ Visit givealittle.co.nz/cause/ redwalks4time2thrive to donate.
