ACCOUNT 2x2 A passion for creating smiles A passion for creating lovely teeth and making people smile is how dentist Jo Milne, at Dentist on Shakespeare, describes her Dedicated team: Standing: Sheila, Lyn, Jo, Judy; sitting: Pam, Alice; absent: Sue. approach to dentistry. Jo offers comprehensive dental care with special interests in cosmetic makeovers and early intervention of gum disease. A commitment to excellence shines through. Straight white teeth give us greater confidence but they often don’t happen naturally. Fortunately, modern techniques and smart materials allow us to remove coffee, red wine and smoking stains – whether it is by in-surgery whitening or add-on coatings. And it doesn’t have to cost the earth because Jo is creative with flexible mediums such as composite resin, a strong durable material that can bridge gaps, reshape broken or chipped teeth and create uniformity very cost effectively. Teeth are just one part of the equation; it is also vital to maintain healthy gums. Looking after your gums extends the life of natural teeth, as well as crowns and other restorations. With an additional diploma in periodontology, Jo is qualified to treat gum disorders. So you no longer need to put up with loose teeth, bleeding gums or bad breath; these can be reversed in amatter of weeks, Jo says. Regular check-ups and cleans are vital for good dental maintenance and they save money and longterm complications. At different life stages we have varying needs when it comes to dental hygiene. Fluctuating hormone levels can affect the body’s reaction to plaque andmake it less able to combat bacteria. For example, women who are pregnant, breast feeding or menopausal have extra requirements for cleaning. Hygienists Lyn and Sue help patients keep their mouths in great shape with regular cleaning and sound advice. Most people get nervous about visiting the dentist but at Dentist on Shakespeare they have modern methods to minimise discomfort and stress. With flexible clinic hours, a high-tech surgery, central location and car parking right outside, what could be easier? This is giving them a unique opportunity to tackle one of the contributing factors to New Zealand’s high rates of asthma and develop new skills they wouldn’t be getting elsewhere. ‘‘Our students are helping to build a house at our Northern Campus using two innovative and potentially life-changing pro clima products; an internal wrap and an external wall and roof underlay,’’ Building Technology Lecturer Stephen Withers says. ‘‘The products will help to ensure a higher level of airtightness and insulation in the house, and the final product will meet standards for a ‘Passive House’, which essentially means it will be much warmer and dryer.’’ NORTH SHORE TIMES, JANUARY 28, 2014 15 Advertising Feature Viewour latest edition online atwww.northshoretimes.co.nz our latest edition online at www.northshoretimes.co.nz Unitec students part of unique building project Unique project: Lecturers Robert Tait and Stephen Withers with Thomas van Raamsdonk. One in six adults in New Zealand have been diagnosed with asthma, and according to Thomas van Raamsdonk, general manager of ProClima, this distressing statistic is linked to the way we build our houses. ‘‘We believe that high levels of asthma can be linked back to the buildings in which mould, damp and air penetrate the building envelope. Our goal at ProClima is to show New Zealanders that it doesn’t have to be this way. We can build homes that have a high level of airtightness and insulation, and will therefore remain warm and dry nomatter the temperature or weather outside.’’ Unitec researchers have been working with ProClima to test their products and collect some solid evidence on how their European-designed products work in the New Zealand climate. ‘‘We are really excited to be working with products that can significantly reduce mould and damp, two significant risk factors for asthma,’’ Mr Withers says. ‘‘These products could also help New Zealand families save serious amounts of money through reduced energy bills.’’ The house will be finished in April when it will go up for sale.
