NZ's oldest theatre gets racy new image By MARNIE HALLAHAN Long running: Devonport's Victoria Theatre opened in 1912. Warning: adult themes The oldest cinema in New Zealand is shedding its fuddy duddy image as it fights to survive in the 21st century. The Vic Theatre will return to its vaudeville roots nesxt month as neo-burlesque show In Flagrante takes to the stage. It's new manager Philipp Jaser says the saucy show is definitely going to test the waters. ''Theatre can be about bringing people out of their comfort zones,'' Mr Jaser says. ''It's challenging and it should be.'' In Flagrante is the latest work by legendary New Zealand choreographer Mary Jane O'Reilly. Mrs O'Reilly says it is the perfect opportunity to draw North Shore audiences back to the historic theatre. And bringing something risque to Devonport's theatre scene is exciting, she says. ''These days I think it's a lot more like the 70s, people are more relaxed about sexuality.'' Audience feedback on the show, which has been touring New Zealand since 2011, has been extremely positive, Mrs O'Reilly says. ''It's a bit of girl power and women seem to love it, and men love it because the cast is nude.'' With a career spanning more then 30 years Mrs O'Reilly feels like she's getting back to her roots. In Flagrante will be heading to Scotland to take part in the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show is on May 17 and 18 at The Vic Theatre, Devonport. See thevic.co.nz. Unitary unrest By LIZ WILLIS and SCOTT MORGAN Wayne Walker George Wood CONTINUED Page 2 NEARLY half of Auckland Council has rebelled against mayor Len Brown's plan to fast-track intensified housing. Two of the rebels are Albany coun- cillor Wayne Walker and Shore rep- resentative George Wood, often on opposite sites of the political fence, but brought together by concerns over the draft unitary plan. Both signed a letter to Prime Min- ister John Key from nine councillors opposing the official council view that the 30-year development rulebook should have some legal effect from September. All want weight given to fierce com- munity resist- ance to the level of intensi- fication as residents struggle to understand the complex plan. The letter, written by Christine Fletcher on behalf of the nine, says: The plan has been rushed to meet electoral deadlines, meaning it is ill considered and has the capacity to cause massive social disrup- tion for genera- tions to come if it is rammed through.'' Mr Wood says: All of a sudden we're going hell for leather for- ward to fit all these extra people in Auckland.'' Rushing the draft unitary plan pro- cess goes against natural justice'', he Everyone should check out what's planned for their suburb and make their views known. After all, this is our city.
