Top architect to design library Construction of the long-awaited new, $7.8 million Devonport Library will begin later this year following extensive community feedback and robust investigations to fnd the best site and design. Artists impression of concept design. Sustainability is a hallmark of the proposed 950m2, two-level library, designed to complement Windsor Reserve and the historic Victoria Street. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Chris Darby says the appointment of award-winning Athfeld Architects is welcome news for the local community which has waited patiently for a modern library. Im confdent well see Devonports reputation for its literary heritage, environmental protection and technological innovation refected in the new library design when the new library design concept is revealed for public feedback this month, he says. The architects selection followed a robust proposal and tender process late last year. Mr Darby says Athfelds emerged from a competitive process which attracted outstanding architectural talent from across New Zealand. Athfelds has proven itself capable of taking library design in a dynamic and innovative direction while honouring historic settings, he says. In spite of major alterations and additions over the years, the current 60 year-old, single-storey library was found to be no longer ft for purpose. We will keep the community informed as the project progresses through to completion. Visit aucklandcouncil.govt.nz for more details. Glenfield Salvation Army cele- brates 40 years of helping the community this weekend. The celebrations will be led by retired Majors David and Judith Bennett who, with their family, played a significant role in the development of the Glenfield corps. Highlights of the Back to Glen- field'' weekend include a Saturday afternoon catered afternoon tea which will feature showing a video of the corp's history and a photo- graphic display. Weather permit- ting, the Glenfield Salvation Army band will play outside. During its 40 years, the Glen- field corps has had 15 officer cou- ples in charge and a number have gone on to become prominent Sal- vation Army leaders. Major Peter Roberts and Cap- tain Gayle Roberts are the current leaders. The corps had humble begin- nings with the first worship meet- ings in a private home. It has been on its current site at 430 Glenfield Rd since 1973 and will be considering its future accommodation needs. In recent years Glenfield has been the base for the Salvation Army's North Shore community services ministry. Dedicated fulltime staff and volunteers today are constantly under huge pressure from residents wanting help with food, money, budgets and relationship advice. They run a weekly community meal and this Christmas helped nearly 900 families in need. The corp is also involved with a long list of community activities including visiting prisoners and hospital patients, attending senior citizens' gatherings and carol singing.
