www.northshoretimes.co.nz 7 NORTH SHORE TIMES, FEBRUARY 7, 2013 Kilisitina (Kilisi) Trinder is a dedicated mother and stu- dent, who owes much of where she is now to the skills and knowledge she gained during her Foundation Stud- ies programme, which she completed at Unitec at the end of 2012. Having enrolled in Level 2 Foun- dation Studies at the beginning of last year, she gained a great- er understanding of and started developing the general study skills needed to increase her chances of being accepted into a degree level programme. As Kilisi had not been in an aca- demic environment since leav- ing school, she found the Level 2 programme helpful in target- ing her academic and individual needs, and easing her back into a learning regime. With the support of sta and students, she was guided and encouraged to achieve her goals and succeed in all her work. After successfully completing the Level 2 programme in se- mester one, Kilisi decided to go further and enrolled in a Level 3 programme for the second half of the year. This programme helped improve her under- standing of written language and improved the structure and technique of her work. Kilisi believes that Unitec s use of interesting and creative tech- niques to teach students, the dedication of the tutors, and the con dence the course gives students, sets it apart from oth- ers at competing institutions. The quality of assignments adds real value to the students skills and knowledge, and the essay topics and presentations allowed Kilisi to explore a range of interesting avenues. This made the programme challeng- ing and bene cial to her learn- ing experience. On completing her Foundation Studies at Unitec, Kilisi enrolled in two summer school courses: Human Development and Hu- man Bioscience, at Massey Uni- versity. From here she is hoping to be accepted into the Bache- lor of Health Science in Nursing during 2013. Her dream is to become a mental health nurse and continue her studies in the mental health area.
