By the time the recession hit, Heather Docherty was worn out by the struggles of small- business ownership and the whirlwind fashion industry. It was time for an exciting new chal- lenge. Instilled with a pas- sion for the natural environment and community-minded pro- jects, she visited a Unitec information even- ing with plans to enrol in a one year course. How- ever, Heather decided to make the leap to a four year internationally accredited programme -- the Unitec Landscape Architecture degree. It was the passion of the lecturers and the diverse course content that encouraged me to do it,'' she says. After graduating, Heather was well pre- pared for creative prac- tice in urban and envir- onmental design, and was quickly snapped up by one of New Zealand's largest architecture firms -- Boffa Miskell. I'm working with amazing people who are the top people in their field, in the country, and on a range of projects that will really make a difference,'' Heather says. I realised I had been missing the satis- faction of doing some- thing truly helpful for the community. The cool thing about landscape architecture is that it's not just about the environment, it's about people too -- you can't separate them out.'' Heather says she star- ted off with more cre- ative aspects, and then built up to more techni- cal aspects of the job. I can't remember a class where I was bored -- it was always so stim- ulating. As a mature student, it was really cool to see the younger students starting off quite unsure of them- selves as designers, and then developing their strengths and their own little niche.'' All the design work, technical experience and storm water manage- ment that Heather stud- ied at Unitec was exactly what Boffa Miskell were looking for. I really enjoy working with such a great com- pany. There are real jobs and landscapes that are going to be affected and you are responsible for managing it the best and most sustainable way -- I'm just so thankful to be out working again in an industry I love.''
