By JESS ETHERIDGE Away singing: Birkenhead's Craig Hallen will be peforming at Aotea Centre's Blues Bar during this year's Auckland Fringe Festival. Photo: JESS ETHERIDGE Wedding singer Craig Hallen is hoping to break the mould. For the last eight years, the 38-year-old from Birkenhead has been working away on his original music while playing the occasional open mic night and wedding. But it was an Adam Sandler film about a passionate wedding singer which inspired him to give music a real go. One of the inspirations for me getting into this sort of things was The Wedding Singer because I loo- ked at what he was doing and thought what a great job , getting up there and performing and enter- taining these people at their wed- ding. I thought that s for me but not in the traditional sense. I d rather perform than be the wedding singer who tinkles away on the piano in the background, he says. He hopes playing his own original music in Fringe opens doors to a career. This is a springboard to getting to do more live performances. He hopes to establish myself as a songwriter and just to write good music, as much as I can . It s not about me, it s about the music. Bringing the piano back into the spotlight. I d love to see that happen. Mr Hallen performs at the Blues Bar, Aotea Centre, in central Auck- land on February 16 and 23 and March 3. Doors open at 5.30pm. Free entry. Kopio Restaurant | Rouge Tea Sentinel Building 3 Northcroft Street, Takapuna Ph 09 486 0122 5136594AA Kopio: Takapuna's Malaysian prize Tasty treats: A selection of Kopio dishes. Respected food blogger Eat Here Now , inter- viewed on National Radio last week, reckons Malaysian food is the most underrated and some of the best value in Auckland. Foodie , another good food blogger, is also a big fan. Why then do we seem to have so few Malaysian restaurants compared to Thai, Japanese, Indian or Chinese? In fact there are sev- eral to be found if you look -- and one of the newest and best has to be Kopio in Takapuna. Situated in the court- yard of The Sentinel, Kopio Malaysian Res- taurant & Bar is owned and run by Malaysian couple Arthur and Mei Wong whose previous successes have been the Oriental Thai Res- taurant in Wellington -- an upmarket restaurant that catered to royalty as well as the well-heeled capital city CEOs, and the popular Kopio in Parnell -- winner of sev- eral awards. Last year they sold the Parnell restaurant, moved into The Sentinel and opened both Kopio Malaysian and Rouge Tea, a bubble tea house run by son Ian. Arthur and Mei are wonderful hosts with fas- cinating backgrounds. Both are qualified architects -- Mei a UK- graduate and Arthur in USA. In Wellington Arthur also worked as an analyst for the ministries of Education and Health. In the kitchen Mei excels with a menu that incorporates Malaysian classics as well as sev- eral Thai dishes. Her Malay seafood and vegetable curry, wonder- ful green curries and authentic five-hour beef rendang receive rave reviews. Other offerings include delicious appet- isers which are perfect for sharing; also laksa, stir fries and Char Kueh Teow noodles. The Kopio kitchen eschews common shor- tcuts in the food s prep- aration, preferring coco- nut milk, galangal, lemongrass and kaffir lime over dairy milk, gin- ger and lemon, for exam- ple. The flavours tell the story -- Kopio diners come back and back! Prices are most reasonable for the qual- ity -- lunches at $13 to $15 are brilliant value. Meanwhile neighbour- ing Rouge Tea is the ulti- mate bubble tea cafe, a perfect place to hang out with friends and enjoy the East Asian tea-based fruit drinks, so popular on USA s West Coast right now. Kopio@Sentinel, incor- porating Rouge Tea, The Sentinel Building, 3/3 Northcroft St, Takapuna. Licensed/BYO wine only. Open seven days 12 noon till late. Phone 486 0122.
