North Shore Language School in Wairau Rd, Glenfield has been operating as a language school for 10 years. In addition to offer- ing English classes, NSLS trains teachers. Trainees receive 12 weeks of extensive training in the theory and practice of teach- ing, and achieve a TESOL qualification. All trainees gain work experience as an English tutor. This course is popular with both beginning and qualified teachers look- ing for further develop- ment. NSLS graduates get two well-recognised teaching qualifications. One is a New Zealand NZQA qualification and the other is the Teaching Knowledge Test from Cambridge University, England. These two qualifica- tions enable you to teach English in New Zealand as well as abroad. North Shore Language School is a Cambridge University pre-testing centre for the Teaching Know- ledge Test. Its teacher trainees can partici- pate in the TKT pre- test at the campus. This allows students to experience the test and to trial future test questions. The pre-tests are marked by Cambridge University and scores are given. This enables the trainees and their tutors to identify strengths and weak- nesses so that the school can guide train- ees to achieve the high- est scores in the TKT. Many NSLS gradu- ating students say they developed a passion for teaching during their TESOL course and that it has given them the confidence to consider teaching as a career. North Shore Language School is located at 122 Wairau Rd, Glenfield on a main bus route and handy to the motorway at Tristram Ave. Phone David 442 4500 for more information. www.nsls.ac.nz. Become your own success story Career launched: NZCC Auckland City campus manager Parks White with aspiring midwife Margaret Price, who recently completed her Certificate in Healthcare Support - Level 4 at the college. If you have always drea- med of a career in the healthcare industry, but thought you had left it too late in life or don t have the right qualifica- tions to get your foot in the door, don t give up -- call the New Zealand Career College (NZCC) instead! T h eN Z C Ci sN ZQA registered and accredited and is ranked fifth out of 187 New Zealand providers for progression to higher level study, with qualification com- pletion rates of 87 per cent. Limited spaces are still available for the NZCC s 2013 Certificate in Healthcare Support -- Level 4, which starts on February 4 and is a great introduction to academic learning and health for anyone who missed out on university entrance at school, or mature learners who are ready for a career change. This 20-week course pathways into 11 differ- ent sectors of health sciences at AUT Univer- sity alone, including nursing, applied mental health, podiatry and midwifery. Students who qualify with a B grade or higher will be eligible to apply for any tertiary institution, university, polytechnic, wananga or private training estab- lishment of their choice. For Margaret Price, a 37-year-old mother of three who completed the Healthcare Support cer- tificate in December 2012, going back to study after nearly 20 years off was extremely daunting -- but with her new quali- fication in hand she has now applied for a place in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Midwifery) at AUT University and is excited about working towards her dream career. Since I had my first child I have wanted to become a midwife, but the timing was always wrong and I was not con- fident at all -- basically I knew what I wanted to do with my life, but not how to get there, Mar- garet says. When Margaret finally plucked up the courage to visit NZCC she was impressed by the wel- coming, warm reception she received. I knew straight away that this was the right place for me. Despite being the oldest student in her class Margaret found that she fit right in and she thrived in the inti- mate, supportive learn- ing environment pro- vided by her experienced tutors.
