Glamour girls: The Academy's Salon Assistant class poses for a photo after completing the glamour look module for hair and makeup. Love cooking, fashion, make-up or sport but not quite ready to take on a huge student loan or find a job? Well you don't have to. The team at Academy NZ is now offering any- one under the age of 18 years with a passion for Fashion, Salon/Beauty, Hospitality or Sport the chance to continue studying for free. We know that schools have limited resources and cannot specialise in every subject but a cam- pus like mine can specialise in certain areas,'' campus manager Kerry Attwood says. This year the academy is launching three fan- tastic new courses. The Academy's Salon Assistant certificate offers you an NCEA level 2 qualification. During the 22-45 weeks of the course, you will learn everything from how to wash and style hair through to massaging, facials and the key to outstanding customer service. If that doesn't appeal how does a certificate in Fashion and Retail sound? Learn the basics from designing window displays to clothing manufacture, then gain some exciting work experience right in the heart of the industry. Then again you might aspire to be the next Nigella or Gordon Ram- say. The academy's won- derful hospitality tutor Tracey will take you right back to where the experts began, teaching you all the basics you will need to excel in the cafe or kitchen. If all of that sounds a bit girlie then hang out in the academy's Sports class, but be warned this is not for the weak or unfocused. So, what's the catch ... all of this and its free? There is no catch. At the end of last year the government decided too many young people are tied down with huge, unnecessary student loans and therefore created the fully funded Youth Guarantee pro- gramme which will pay for your training. But you will have to be quick as spaces are fill- ing fast. To find out more call the team at Academy New Zealand on 0800 4 academy or visit the website www.academy. ac.nz.
