Photo: JESS ETHERIDGE By JESS ETHERIDGE Helping special needs children develop in a safe place is the push behind a unique playgroup in Birkenhead. Special Bees is for chil- dren with special needs and their siblings, Emily Conway says. Mrs Conway, a quali- fied social worker, has worked in the special needs area for 15 years. But the mother-of-one, and other parents at her Plunket playgroup realised no special needs children attended. Mrs Conway teamed up with Plunket Birken- head to create the group, starting on February 11. Some special needs children experience iso- lation from parents and caregivers in playgroups, she says. Too much noise and stimulation can hin- der development. The group will be held in a small lounge with wheelchair access and carpeted floors. Plunket Birkenhead community support co- ordinator Carla Van Walen says Plunket is always keen to move forward with community projects . A group has been created by Plunket Hibiscus Coast, she says. Special Bees meets every second and last Monday of the month during term time from 9.30am. The first session begins on February 11 at Zion Hill Methodist Church lounge, Onewa Rd. No registration or booking is needed. Cost is $3 per family. Contact Emily on 021 040 2215 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
