Trust spokesman John Hooper says this year's fundraising event is cru- cial for the Westpac Res- cue Helicopter. After cuts in funding from Auckland Council we will be even more reliant on donations. Last year we made over 790 missions to Waiheke, up from 450 rescues in 2009. As the aging popu- lation converts their hol- iday baches to perma- nent homes in places like Omiha, Whangaparoa and Waiheke, the service will become even more important,'' he says.
