Photo: TROELS SOMMERVILLE Desperate Diesel has tried every- thing in his search for love. He has taken out ads in the newspapers, created his own Facebook page and has even resorted to begging in his fruitless quest. But the long wait could be over for the 10-month-old husky-shar pei cross puppy as the SPCA's Second Chance for Love adopt-a- thon rolls around. On the weekend of February 12 to 13 -- just ahead of Valentine's Day -- the SPCA's Auckland Ani- mal Village in Mangere will hold its third annual adoption drive. The event is aimed at uniting pets with their forever homes'', SPCA Auckland operations man- ager Tracy Dunn says. The village will be decorated in the Valentine's Day spirit and spot prizes and giveaways will add to the festivities. As an extra incentive, adoption prices for all animals will be reduced by 50 percent during the weekend. More than 500 pets were adopted during last year's nation- wide event and the SPCA's aiming for more this year, Mrs Dunn says. The luckless Diesel's been a resident at the village since August last year when he was abandoned as part of an unwanted litter. The rest of his siblings have all found loving homes. Canine attendant Barbara Sha- keshaft looks after the pocket rocket''. It's a shame I can't take him home -- but I've got cats.'' Diesel can't go to a home with cats because of his high prey drive'', but he has a wonderful temperament, she says.
