Carekids bring hope to sick children By LISA HONEYBONE A group of local kids used their school holidays to raise $58 for sick children. The group from Carekids after- school care and holiday programme set up shop in Mairangi Bay and sold Hope Dolls for $3 each. The money raised will go to True Colours, a Hamilton-based charity that supports children and young people living with chronic, serious or life-threatening illnesses. Hope Dolls came about from think- ing about how they could support sick children. They made around 35 dolls using wooden pegs as a base and decorated them with wool, feathers, leaves and fabric. One of the project leaders, Cleo Wheeler, 11, says she wanted to give them all names and stories so each doll was unique. I liked making them because the money goes to help sick kids. Carekids is a before and after-school programme that cares for children. Programme manager Margaret O Sullivan says it also wants children to care for each other and for other children.
