Roadwork timing is absolutely diabolical' By JODEAL CADACIO Auckland Transport is under fire again from angry motorists caught this time in traffic jams on East Coast Rd. Ongoing roadworks on the stretch near Constel- lation Drive to Sunset Rd required a lane closure, causing queues that backed up all the way to Browns Bay Rd during Tuesday's morn- ing peak. Takapuna Grammar School staff member Barbara Campbell, one of those caught in the chaos, says it was the worse she has experi- enced in her 15 years travelling from Browns Bay to work. Contractors are re- doing the footpath at the eastern side of the road, requiring closure of the adjacent lane. Southbound traffic was held up by vehicles turning right into Con- stellation Drive. The traffic is ridicu- lous and there was nothing on the road to indicate there's a lane closure ahead so people can get off that route,'' she says. Ms Campbell says the timing of the roadworks is absolutely diabolical'' with the start of the school year. They should have put signage to give drivers enough leeway to avoid the bottleneck but there wasn't any. And why didn't they get this done with before the schools opening? They should get real,'' she says. She says the buck passing at Auckland Council when she rang to complain about the traffic chaos adds insult to injury. Auckland Transport external communications manager Sharon Hunter says the work on East Coast Rd is expected to be finished by the end of the month. She says they are part of the road upgrade proj- ect to widen traffic lanes and footpath for improved safety to all road users.
