That was a com- ment overheard recently at GPK, the stylish brasserie-style res- taurant on the main highway at Albany. They were talking about GPK s signature wood-fired gourmet piz- zas. A couple of examples? How about the staggeringly good Spanish pizza -- like paella on a pizza -- or Romano, a wonderful amalgamation of parma ham, goat s cheese, onion relish, rocket and walnut pesto. But pizza isn t the sum total of what GPK is all about -- it s the whole package of menu, ser- vice, bar, winelist, every- thing from great pre- dinner cocktails to excel- lent coffee. The entrees are always a step up from the norm -- whether it s their GPK Selection -- a medley of fresh seafoods in sashimi and tempura style with dipping sources; the ever-popular tender spiced squid with garlic aioli and lime; fresh oysters served with Chardonnay vinegar and warm bread; or a Charcuterie plate -- GPK s infinitely superior take on antipasto. An excellent pasta menu has more innovative delights, such as creamy and flavoursome crab and green pea risotto. The mains menu also demands decisions -- will it be something from the food-comfort zone like pork belly or half-duck, both twice-cooked to cre- ate crackingly crisp outers and succulent inners ... or one of the award-winning prime beef cuts such as Wagyu beef sirloin with condiments and truffle potato mash? Dessert? If you have room you ll be in raptures over vanilla and berry creme brulee, or raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake. Top notch service and wine recommendations, quality food and value all round -- this is consist- ently one of the best restaurants in Auckland.
