While it's only being driven by automotive journalists for the first time this month, German motoring publication Auto Zeitung' has already given the new Peugeot 508 its first prize in its Auto Trophy awards, ahead of 18 rival models in the import Mit- telklasse' segment. The 508 garnered 18.2 percent of votes in its category beating 18 competitors to gain its prize. The 508's shape is evolved from a company show car called the SR1, and while it eschews the krille-eating wide-mouthed looks of the current 407, it's just as striking and perhaps a little less intimidating. Peugeot says its shape is very much French chic, equally at home in Paris or London -- or our own capital for that matter. The 508 will be powered by a range of engines all well positioned in their categories in terms of performance and driveability, but also fuel con- sumption and CO2 emissions with Peugeot's new e-HDi stop and start system which offers improved driveability and econ- omy enhancements of up to 15 percent. Some time after its launch, Peugeot's HYbrid4 technology will become available on the 508 and will provide 160kW, performance with all-wheel drive and emissions of 99g/km of CO2 or zero in electric mode. The Peugeot 508 will be avail- able in two body styles: a sedan measuring 4.79 metres and a sta- tion wagon two centimetres longer. Both models will be produced in Rennes, France, for the European and export markets and later this year in China, for the Chinese market. Both petrol and turbodiesel versions of the car will be avail- able, though the New Zealand specfications have not yet been finalised. An optional six-speed two-pedal electronically controlled manual gearbox (EGC) will be featured and this results in the 1.6 HDi power car managing an emissions rating of just 109g/km. Turbo and naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol fours are available as well as turbodiesel units of 1.6, 2.0 and 2.2 litres. At this point neither petrol nor diesel V6 power units are on the horizon. The 508 is available with two different front suspension configurations. An all-new pseudo McPherson type front suspension will be on the majority of 508s while a GT model features a drop link double wishbone front set-up that separates suspension and steering forces for the high per- formance model's necessary higher road holding and steering needs. At the rear a multi-arm suspen- sion is used for all 508s, with Peugeot citing better body control and ride comfort thanks to the system's inherently superior con- trol of longitudinal and transverse forces. The 508 goes on sale in Europe in the northern hemisphere Spring, while our own versions are due in July.
