A step ahead: The children learn how to hold a pencil and are encouraged to write their name. If you have a child aged three or four years old then now is the time to think about getting them prepared for starting school. Many children are often overwhelmed when they arrive into the school environment. Some have trouble adapting to the struc- ture, learning tools and independence required for a successful smooth transition to school. The Stepping Ahead Learning Centre offers three- and four-year-old children the opportunity to experience a school- like environment with a fun introduction to read- ing, writing, maths, the alphabet and phonics. Programme designers Laura and Glenda are qualified primary school teachers and have been running the Stepping Ahead Learning pro- gramme successfully for over 13 years. Just one hour a week is all that is needed to give your child the skills required to make starting school easier. Learning is based around the Stepping Ahead innovative programmes, Alphabet Steps and Alphabet Adventures. Sessions are kept small with a maximum of just eight children. Each class is based on a different letter and includes mat time, writing time, story time, activity sheets, a craft activity and more. The children learn some critical skills to help them in stepping ahead -- how to hold a pencil properly, for example. They are also encour- aged to learn to write their name. The teachers provide lots of positive encour- agement and offer individualised learning tapered for each child s level. All this is with the aim to increase confidence and independence and give children the tools they need to enjoy a smooth stress free tran- sition to the school environment. For just $25 a session the Stepping Ahead Learning Programme is an invaluable way to pre- pare children for school in a fun, encouraging educational environ- ment. Stepping Ahead sessions are held at a convenient central Taka- puna location and run on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesdays and Thursdays at various times to suit you. If you d like to see the benefits first hand, the centre offers free introductory lessons for three and four year olds. Parents are also welcome to observe a class in action.
