Teen s design wins $500 Promising artist: Torbay Business Association chairman Tony Carter, left, gives 15-year- old Matt Oades from Long Bay College a $500 cheque for his winning design for the association. By JODEAL CADACIO The Torbay Business Association is sporting a new logo, thanks to a Long Bay College student s exceptional design. Association co-ordin- ator Carole McMinn says the new logo was created by 15-year-old Matt Oades. Mrs McMinn says it resulted from a design competition run by the association to get some ideas to freshen up Torbay s branding. She went along to the Long Bay Graphics department and challenged some of the aspiring graphic artists to rebrand Torbay. The only thing was we wanted to retain the tor but we were looking for new and fresh ideas. The tor has always been pivotal to anything as it is the tor that Torbay is named after. She says competition was tough, with the offer of a $500 prize to the winner. We were amazed at some of the ideas but felt the clear winner was Matt who also lives in Torbay, loves the beach and that helped to inspire him, she says. The design features the tor at Waiake Beach as the letter O in TORBAY with the line It s not just a place, but a lifestyle . She says Matt s design was most professional and we can see he has a great future in graphic design .
