She started out as a youth cadet in the organ- isation's Takapuna div- ision and has not been able to bring herself to leave. She was among those honoured for years of service in both adult and youth divisions. You never really leave St John, there's something there that ropes you back in,'' she says. For Mrs Crowther, it's seeing youngsters learn important life skills, grow and have fun earn- ing badges and attending camps that has kept her interest. She has seen cadets go on to be ambulance officers and her daughter is among those looking to become a cadet leader. Mrs Crowther's hus- band, her parents and siblings have also been involved in St John. All the adults would end up at my parents place for breakfast on Anzac Day after the Dawn Parade. It's really a family thing.'' Which is another reason why it's hard to leave, she says. We've all tried to quit,'' her husband Glen jokes. Mrs Crowther stepped down from leadership to raise her family but joined up again when her brother set up the Bir- kenhead youth division. Visit www.st johnyouth.org.nz or contact 0800 ST JOHN if you would like to get involved.
