Photos: BEN WATSON By MICHELLE ROBINSON Birds have been dying at Chelsea Heritage Park ponds as the weather heats up. At least seven sick birds have been reported around the ponds since November 2010, Auck- land Council stormwater manager Grant Ockles- ton says. Over the past few years ducks and birds have been getting poisoned by avian botu- lism bacteria from the ponds which become stagnant in hotter weather, he says. Ducks die by the hun- dreds,'' resident and frequent dog walker Jill Clarke says. There were 75-plus last year.'' She doesn't let her dog go near the water but often sees small children sticking their hands in it. It may not be toxic now but as summer goes on it will be. Fish have been dying. It makes me so angry because it's a beautiful well-used area. The stink last year you could smell it up Col- onial Rd.'' It's not uncommon to find sick ducks in waterways in the Auck- land region in summer, Mr Ockleston says. Hot, dry weather means less water flow and a perfect breeding ground'' for the bacteria -- a paralytic and often fatal toxin. Affected birds can't move their feet or hold their heads up and often drown, Rothesay Bay- based bird lady'' Sylvia Durrant says. She treats sick birds with fluids to flush the toxin out.
