Photo: BEN WATSON A female manager was treated for burns to her face after a fire at Takapuna Burger King last week. There was an explosion while staff were cooking burgers about 2.30pm on Thursday , Takapuna Fire Station senior officer John Sweeney says. Firefighters from three North Shore stations were called to the scene but sprinklers had already put the fire out. They treated the female manager until ambulance staff arr- rived and are also cleaning up water from the sprinklers. The building only suffered a bit of water damage. It shows how important sprinklers are in a fire, Mr Sweeney says. IN BRIEF Tennis anyone? Get your racket out for the North Shore Hospice charity fun tennis day on Sunday, March 6. Knives found By MICHELLE ROBINSON Pocket knives and screwdrivers have been found on people visiting North Shore District Court. They were the most common items detected by a walk-through metal detector last year. The detector was introduced as part of a four-year Justice Minis- try security programme. The programme is being funded by $9 million from the government s 2009 Budget. Extra security staff and equipment are being deployed to courthouses throughout New Zea- land. Nearly 8000 people were screened at North Shore District Court and 45 items were tempor- arily surrendered to the court s two security officers, ministry stat- istics show. Mainly small pocket knives and screwdrivers were picked up. No items found were deemed to be offensive weapons, Justice Minis- try general manager of property and security David Stevenson says.
