She is pictured with an array of sashes from her beauty pageant days. Photo: BEN WATSON By SARAH CODDINGTON Melissa Martin was shopping at the age of 15 when she was approached by a beauty pageant organiser. It was a moment that would change her life. The Devonport resident went on to win Miss Manukau City, appeared in a television commer- cial with Beatles legend Ringo Starr and was placed first runner- up in Miss Universe New Zealand. She travelled all over the world to beauty pageants, including Istanbul to represent New Zea- land in the 1988 Miss Globe Inter- national. Now Ms Martin, 41, wants other young women to have the same chance that she did. She is organising the first Miss North Harbour competition in 18 years to be held on Sunday, March 27, at the Bruce Mason Centre. Fifteen girls between the ages of 18 and 26 will be chosen for the competition. In 1993 when the last Miss North Harbour was held, the title went to Nicola Brighty, who now works as an international air hostess. Ms Brighty, who is part Samoan, German and English went on to win Miss New Zealand. The new Miss North Harbour will go on to compete in Miss Uni- verse New Zealand held in Wel- lington later in the year. Call Melissa Martin on 446-6466 or email on melissa@ missnorthharbour.co.nz for entry details. Entries close on February 14.
