PHOTO: CRAIG JULICH-SERVENTY There is both comedy and farce to enjoy in the 15th summer of Shake- speare in the Park prod- uctions, held in the amphitheatre at Taka- puna s PumpHouse . The 2011 season has alternating perform- ances of the romantic comedy As You Like It and the contentious farce The Taming of the Shrew. What could be more appropriate than the theme of Shakespeare on Love in the park, on the lake shore as the summer evening settles down above you? asks Shoreside Theatre s artistic director Carol Dumbleton. Two very different heroines, one being madly in love and the other despising love and men. Shakespeare had a phenomenal talent for giving his public what it wanted: Blood and guts, sex, lust and love, tragedy and triumph. The new North Shore season, staged true to text and period, looks at the lighter side of life and offers two famous plays with contrasting styles, sets and costumes. The men in contest with the two beauties have much to contend with. Rosalind certainly likes her man, Orlando. He s gutsy, brave, cute and hard up though luckily he s as smitten with her as she with him. In contrast, Kate, the shrew of Padua has the money, the means and the looks, but hates men! It is only the offer of a rich dowry that convinces the rascal Petruchio to take her on and in the process, teach her a lesson. Both guys have their work cut out for them. Orlando is sure to appeal to the female audience He s young, passionate and good looking and played by Red Beach actor Nick Gray. Petruchio on the other hand (portrayed by Devonport actor Brian Johnston) has a dry and cutting Scottish humour which is sure to amuse the male spectators. Interpreting the very different leading lady roles are two top stage performers Caitlin Ivory from Birkenhead and Cath Boniface, a Greenhithe resident. Actresses have over the years been drawn to the unique challenges of the leading roles in these two productions and some of the most famous names of stage and screen have tackled them. The Shakespeare in the Park season starts next Saturday and runs through until February 12 with all performances starting at 8pm. Con- cession rates are avail- able for senior citizens/ students and children, plus an extra saving if you book both shows at once. Performance dates: 'As You Like It' January 14, 15, 16, 21, 25, 27, 29; February 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 11. 'The Taming of the Shrew' January 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 26, 28, 30; February 2,4,8,10,12.
