Outspoken board member Vivienne Keo- hane was asked to leave the board s first official business meeting after using a swear word to describe the way the chairwoman was speak- ing. The former Glenfield Community Board mem- ber and North Shore councillor was angry about missing out on roles that oversee road- ing and town centre issues. She said she was the most qualified for the role because of her involvement in Birkenhead-Northcote town centre planning and similar projects. The Kaipatiki town centre and streetscapes portfolio was instead allocated to chairwoman Lindsay Waugh and member John Gillon. Lindsay gave a load of rubbish saying she wanted to make use of my skills in other areas. I called out, Mrs Keo- hane says. Ms Waugh asked her to apologise and then leave the meeting. Really Mrs Keohane s behaviour was unaccept- able, I can t tolerate bad language and disre- spect, Ms Waugh says. She has strong feelings about porfolios, but six out of eight people were happy. You can t please everyone all the time. She says Mrs Keohane turned down the oppor- tunity to hold the arts and culture; libraries, recreation and com- munity facilities; and natural environment portfolios. Mrs Keohane listened to the meeting from outside and heard members discuss the allocation of an extra $2000 per member for the year from the Remuneration Auth- ority. This option was chosen over allocating the additional $16,000 to deputy chairman Nick Kearney for his responsi- bilities or to board com- mittee chairpersons, she says. Mrs Keohane had earlier spoken out against the board accepting it, saying it s unfair on ratepayers. Kaipatiki Board members are remun- erated $37,400 for the year, and $67,700 for the chairperson.
