Child dental clinic eases travel pain By SARAH CODDINGTON Open Wide: Dental therapist Lana Smith gives Glenfield Intermediate student Andrea Cepeda a check up at the school's new dental clinic. Photo: BEN WATSON Andrea Cepeda was the first child to be put in the hot seat in the North Shore's new child community dental clinic. The new clinic at Glenfield Intermediate School means children living in the North Shore and Rodney area will not have to travel to Greenlane or Mangere for specialist dental treatment. It will serve about 3500 children who live in the Wai- temata District Health Board area. It is the first part of the health board's initiative to set up nine fixed dental clinics and 15 transportable units within the Waitemata area. New Zealand's school den- tal service began almost a century ago. Some of the existing clinics are more than 40 years old and no longer support mod- ern dentistry. New clinics will feature up- to-date equipment and, in time, digital radiography will supersede the traditional x-rays being used. Health board dental man- ager Belinda Tafua says in the past children who required sedation during treatment had to travel to clinics in Auckland. Most children who live in the Waitemata area are enrolled in a school com- munity clinic. Only certain private clinics provide free dental care to children. The Glenfield Intermediate four-chair clinic will have up to four dental therapists, a community dentist and about three dental assistants. It will serve eight schools in the area as well as pre- school age children. New Zealand's dental ser- vice is free for children up to aged 18. Help to settle in By JODEAL CADACIO An initiative by the East Coast Bays Community Centre is making new- comers feel welcome in their new home. The centre runs the International Friend- ship Group for migrants and residents in the area, community co- ordinator Sally Cargill says. Its main objective is to organise activities to help newcomers settle in their new home and be part of an active multi- cultural community. The group runs a number of courses. They include French and Eng- lish language courses, after-school classes for children, t'ai chi, art classes and other activi- ties. We've got a huge var- iety of classes, we just pack them in,'' she says. This is part of the East Coast Bays com- munity project providing support, resources and wellbeing in our com- munity.'' Call Ms Cargill on 478-4301 or email ECBCP@xtra.co.nz for more details.
