Best friends: Matthew Dickie, 15, says Lady is a great friend and companion who he was desperate to save. Photo: BEN WATSON Family's plea for help By LISA HONEYBONE ALLOWING its beloved pet to face death row for a second time wasn t an option for a Mairangi Bay family. So there were no qualms when it came to spending $5000 on life saving surgery. Forrest Hill Vet Clinic nurse Danielle Howard adopted her dog Lady more than a year ago. Lady s pre- vious owners decided to give her up and she was facing euthanasia unless someone took her in within seven days. But the border collie cross run of luck was shortlived. An overexcited dog jumped on her back at Mairangi Bay on December 1. Lady couldn t walk the next morning. She was taken to Forrest Hill Vet Clinic where Kevin O Meara diagnosed her with a ruptured disc. Lady was referred to the Veterinary Specialist Group in Mt Albert where surgeon Michael King removed a large amount of disc material from around her spine. He was happy with her condition following surgery. I expect her to be walking around within a couple of weeks, he says. Expectant mum Danielle says she couldn t really afford the surgery but had to make a decision on the spot. Her partner s brother Mat- thew Dickie, 15, was also des- perate for Lady to get the operation. Matthew suffered a brain injury as a toddler and now suffers from epilepsy, migraines and constant headaches. He was in Starship children s hospital a couple of months ago and Lady went to stay with him for company when he went home. Within days Lady wouldn t leave his side. Danielle says Lady believed she had a job to do looking after Matthew. She would alert his mum when he was having a migraine or feeling off-colour, she says. She s very loyal to Matt. Matthew says Lady also helps him deal with his depression and cutting down his number of headaches. She s a great companion and friend, he says. Phone Forrest Hill Vet Clinic on 410-5169 or visit 218 Forrest Hill Rd to contribute to Lady's surgery or her after- care.
