Photo: BEN WATSON By SARAH CODDINGTON The moment Mark Ridley had a motorcycle accident his life changed forever. He was only 18 and had just started a butcher apprenticeship. For about seven weeks helayinacomaonlife support and lost a huge amount of weight. His family's prayers were answered when he finally woke. Now the 40-year-old wants to give something back to those who helped him recover and is hand peddling his way from the Cape to the Bluff. He wants to spread the word to New Zealanders about how important it is to wear a helmet. Mr Ridley was grateful he was wearing a helmet because on the day of his accident he almost forgot it.While on his hand- pedalling mission Mr Ridley passed through the North Shore stopping into the Stewart Centre, a brain injury rehabili- tation centre. Mr Ridley spent years of rehabilitation in Palm- erston North learning how to walk, talk and take on daily activities. After the North Shore Times met with Mr Ridley he was planning to pedal from Takapuna to Devonport and then to catch the ferry to the city. Each day he is pedal- ling about 48km with his support crew in tow. Along his journey he is collecting funds for Brain Injury Association Northland.
