Photo: BEN WATSON ‘ I hope this will inspire people to go out and walk the bush close to where they live. ’ Hugh Willis HUGH Willis has spent his own time and money creating scenic bush walks in Albany and East Coast Bays over the past 40 years. Now he’s making sure North Shore residents know exactly what’s on offer. Mr Willis is producing a booklet about the 15 tracks he developed over the decades. The 76-year-old is aiming to sell 1000 copies at $5 a piece, with all proceeds going to the Bays Library Foun- dation. ‘‘My huge aim is to make people aware of the beautiful bush and tracks on the North Shore,’’ the Torbay man says. ‘‘I hope this will inspire people to go out and walk the bush close to where they live.’’ The retired high school maths teacher and other volunteers carved user- friendly tracks in 15 bush areas in Albany and East Coast Bays. He made headway through the bushes using spades, picks, shovels and paint buckets to lay the track sur- face with gravel. Teams from the Advanced Training Centre in North Harbour pitched in to carry buckets of gravel. The tracks featured in his booklet are the Albany Trig Walk, in an upper reach of Lucas Creek and through Albany Scenic Reserve, the Totara Forest River Walk, Three Streams, Rata and Kate Sheppard tracks. There are also the Awaruku Reserve 1 and 2, Stredwick and Emlyn loop walks, Fitzwilliam Bush Res- erve, Centennial Park and coastal walks north and south of Torbay. Mr Willis says the loop tracks, varying from 500 metres to about 3km, bring walkers back to the starting point. ‘‘The bush walks are all weather tracks that allow you to walk throughout the year on firm gravel – almost cer- tainly no muddy patches even after the rain in winter. ‘‘In summer, even on the hottest days, it is so beauti- fully cool in the bush – a great way to escape the heat,’’ he says. Mr Willis is putting the finishing touches on the book- let that will be available this month at the Albany and Browns Bay libraries.
