Bank ad angers bus user By LISA HONEYBONE AN ASB advertisement is morally wrong because it tries to shame people using buses, a Northcote woman says. Lara, who does not want to be formally identified, has referred her complaint to the Advertising Standards Auth- ority. She says she was catch- ing the bus to work through downtown Auckland when shesawtheadinabusstop window near Britomart. It reads: I'm a bus stop. One day you will drive past me in that nice little car ASB helped you save for. Vroom.'' The 23-year-old says she found it incredibly offensive and contradictory to Auck- land's pro-public transport campaign. The ad implies that I'm on the bus because I can't afford a nice little car' and that if I could, I would be driving it rather than taking the bus,'' she says. Lara says she does own a car that she saved for and bought. People might use public transport for various reasons including that it is more efficient and environmentally friendly.'' Even if someone can't afford a car it is socially unjust to insult them and promote shame in using pub- lic transport, she says. Lara has no problems with the bank, just the advertise- ment. ASB Bank general man- ager brand and marketing Deborah Simpson says the ad isoneinaseriesof10or12in a new campaign about cre- ating futures. Financing cars is just one of the things the bank helps their customers with, she says. It's not an attempt to belittle the use of public transport. It's a bit of tongue- in-cheek.'' The bank has also faced criticism over another ad in the series which offers parents loans to pay for fer- tility treatment. Reddy and able thanks to exercise class Keeping fit: Neil Reddy, 84, uses his mobility scooter to help him exercise. Photo: BEN WATSON By SARAH CODDINGTON Neil Reddy's mobility scooter is not only a handy mode of transport it is also a good prop for exercising. The 84-year-old Birken- head resident attends a toning and strengthening class and uses his scooter to lean on while exercising. It was not so long ago he was doing floor exercises with the rest of the class but since he suffered two strokes his balance has been affected and he needs assistance to keep steady. At first he used a walking frame to keep steady in the class but one day he drove right into the class on his mobility scooter and instruc- tor Maria Trubuhovich thought she could use it in his routine. Mr Reddy first discovered the exercise class about eight years ago and has been attending even since. And he may be close to 85 years old but he still knows how to impress the ladies in his all-women class at The Workshop. Mr Reddy says he enjoys the company of the ladies, but does admit he starts to switch off when they talk about things like shoes, makeup and skincare. I enjoy listening to all their problems, they seem to have quite a few,'' Mr Reddy says. He is the only male who attends regular coffee out- ings and lunch gatherings with the ladies. His upcoming birthday will be no exception. Thirty women who have attended the class are expected to attend a cham- pagne brunch. Most importantly the actual exercise class keeps him fit and he swears if he wasn't doing the exercise he would be very stiff. Recently he suffered from a shoulder injury but work- ing on it in the class he has seen great improvement. He says all elderly should have a fitness routine.
