The event is at the AMI Netball Centre on 44 Northcote Rd, from 6pm, with North Shore ward councillor Ann Hartley as guest speaker. Manager Birgit Graf- arend-Watungwa says the event highlights a successful year for tutors and learners. It s our way of getting all tutors and learners together and thanking all those who made this year successful, she says. She says more than 700 learners, mostly refugees, have been catered for by almost 300 volunteer tutors. For many of our learners, learning and improving English is an immediate goal as well as a necessity to partici- pate in New Zealand society, contribute to the country s economy and settle well in their local communities, she says. She says tutors have made a difference to newcomers who face language hurdles. Mrs Grafarend-Wat- ungwa says certificates will be presented to dis- tinguished tutors and learners. The programme in- cludes cultural perform- ances by groups from the Philippines, Cambodia and Iran, shared food, a hamper draw and a fan- tastic opportunity to celebrate our success in 2010, she says. Call 489-2078 or email birgit@englishlanguage. org.nz for more details. Festive spirit: Friendly staff help make a great occasion at GPK. GPK -- what you really want for Christmas Office end-of-year celebrations are meant to be a reward for all your hard work and effort. So how come they often end in com- promise instead of being a celebration of excellence? We say, be firm. Make 2010 the year of positive action -- reject all talk of compromise -- and head for GPK in Takapuna! With indoor and outdoor tables, the summer sea air on the breeze, cheer- fully unflappable staff and consistently high quality food, it s one place that never lets diners down. The bar is a great place to start. It s got style, the bar staff are slick performers and seeing cocktails mixed, drinks poured with panache and glasses lifted in appreciation is all part of the Christmas spirit. Foodwise, there can be no more con- sistent kitchen than GPK. Over the years this popular restaurant has evolved a cuisine that seems to suit every customer. Presentation is bettered only by taste. GPK virtually invented the gourmet pizza (both traditional and thin- based); and also serve excellent pasta. A la carte and specials menus offer the freshest of seafood and seasonal salads; the best New Zealand organic meats including grass or grain fed beef and full blood wagyu; veg- etable accompaniments that always seem to harmonise the main dish; and the most moreish dessert menu around! If you want to discuss a specially catered menu to an allocated budget, phone the restaurant and they ll be happy to talk options. Both GPK Taka- puna and Albany restaurants have generous seating for groups, and if you want to hold a larger group function the Ponsonby restaurant has private upstairs rooms. GPK Takapuna, 162 Hurstmere Rd, open for lunch and dinner till late; weekend brunches; fully licensed; takeaway pizza menu. Phone 488-0015.
