Auckland Council com- missoners adjorned a hearing and planned a site visit before a final ruling was made. The makeover plan involves opening up the reserve and installing a stage and additional seats to make it the civic heart and entertainment centre for Takapuna. It includes the removal of 30 trees and 53 palms, small trees and shrubs. The project is going through resource consent process and submissions have been received. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Jan O Connor objects to the removal of trees and the plan to build a 115-square-metre deck by ASB building. The application would significantly reduce the reserve, she says. Most fine weekends and lunchtimes during the week I have watched people using the park. It is a retreat in between two very large build- ings, Mrs O Connor says. The people enjoy the shade and shelter the trees provide and if they want a view of the sea there is access to the beach . The Takapuna Resi- dents Association and Environment Takapuna have also called for the application to be declin- ed.Chairman Donald Bidwell says the pro- posal is an unnecessary and wasteful use of com- munity funds . The Takapuna Beach Business Association supports the project which it says will provide the town centre with a civic heart. General manager Peter White is hoping the makeover will be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup.
