' Bayswater School principal Chris Heney Bayswater School has reached a major mile- stone on its journey as a sustainable school by achieving Green Gold Enviroschool status. More than 600 schools in New Zealand are part of the Enviroschools net- work. Green Gold status is a distinction shared with about 30 schools across the country. Only two other North Shore schools have achieved Green Gold status -- Northcote Col- lege and Verrans Pri- mary. Bayswater School principal Chris Heney says enviro-learning has been deeply embedded in the school's teaching and learning programmes since 2001. It is curriculum driven and encompasses the whole school and staff. Ms Heney says the school has undertaken a number of projects over the years including installing photovoltaic panels on classroom roofs to provide the school with some renew- able energy. There is also a roof collection sys- tem for rain water. Students have designed and built habi- tat and feeding stations for wildlife around a new walkway. They have also created seven pou, with the help of local artist Jill Cahill, which cel- ebrate the environment through traditional Maori stories. Every student has con- tributed to their cre- ation. Schools that partici- pate in the programme make a commitment to developing environmen- tal education and action in their school. Other guiding prin- ciples are respect for diversity of people and cultures, Maori pers- pectives and learning for sustainability. Ms Heney says the students are all very involved in the projects and interested in the environment. These are finite resources that can't be wasted, she says. There is an important link between school and home to help carry the message through, she says. Visit www.enviro schools.org.nz.
