Photo: BEN WATSON A Fisherman didn t have time to turn around before a 10-metre launch rode over him. Dean Woods had gone fish- ing in his 2.9 metre inflatable in the Rangitoto Channel. But instead of kingfish and snapper, he ended up with a written-off boat. I was sitting on the floor of my boat when I heard an engine really close and before I could turn around it went up the back of mine and across the entire length of it. If I had been standing up it would have been all over. The fuel tank broke away and the boat filled up like a bathtub . He escaped with a few scrapes and bruises and chased the twin-hulled power cat before the skipper realised what had happened. He came back, he was a bit shaken, he said he didn t see me. There was a slight chop in the water but no swell and the sun was up at the time, Mr Woods says. After being towed back to shore he asked the skipper for his details but he said he didn t have a pen and took off. Mr Woods managed to track down the launch s new owner and found out that it had been on a delivery route when the incident occurred. The owner knew nothing about the inci- dent. Mr Woods says if the $250,000 launch had been his he would have wanted to be told about any potential dam- age. He eventually got hold of the skipper and says police are planning to charge him for failing to keep look-out. The skipper said he didn t say anything because he was still in shock. Mr Woods is grateful his son slept in that day instead of joining him on the trip. He wants to warn boaties to be mindful of others on the water. Even if you re anchored, keep a solid lookout, that s for sure. Assume they can t see you.
