A recruitment campaign has been launched in a bid to lift Hato Petera College's student roll. The Maori Catholic secondary school is targeting the North Shore for day students. Board chairman Norm McKen- zie says the school does not have a falling roll and prides itself on having small classes. The campaign has been running for a month and has attracted 56 potential students. Mr McKenzie says this time last year there were just five student applications. There is a roll of 160 day and boarding students from year 9 to 13. The school hopes to have 245 students next year. Earlier this year principal Brother David McDonald resigned to take up another role in the Marist Brother religious order. The job has been advertised. Mr McKenzie says Maori do not get the help needed in state schools and often drop out. About 50 percent of the students that have been under the state system we take in are illiter- ate and don't have the best read- ing skills.'' Mr McKenzie says the school has a good NCEA record and graduates include All Black Wal- ter Little, the first Maori priest Father Wiremu Te Awhitu and academic Ranginui Walker. Enrolments are accepted from year 9 to 13 students. Whanau tours are every Wednesday at 3pm. Call 480-7784 or email firstname.lastname@example.org or go to www.hatopetera.school.nz for information on enrolments.
