Lindsay Waugh has been voted in to chair the board for the next three years despite a suggestion that the position should be changed half way through the term. We are indeed a fortunate com- munity. We have a rich resource of community facilities, community organisations and an extraordinary wealth of parks and reserves,'' Ms Waugh said at the board's first meet- ing. The board takes in Birkenhead, Northcote, Birkdale, Beach Haven and Glenfield. Former Glenfield Community Board chairman and member Nick Kearney was elected deputy chairman of the new board. The other members are Grant Gillon and his son John Gillon, Chris Marsh- all, Richard Hills, Vivienne Keohane and Kay McIntyre. Ms Waugh says a project close to the hearts of many sectors of the com- munity, with the potential to add tour- ism value, is to clear the waterways of the stranglehold'' of mangroves. The upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour used to provide safe anchor- age for early settlers' ships, Ms Waugh says. The motion that the chairperson's position should be shared with former North Shore councillor Grant Gillon was lost after being tabled by fellow former councillor Mrs Keohane. Mr Gillon and Mrs Keohane were part of former mayor Andrew Wil- liams' A-team'' while Ms Waugh stood for election under the Shore Voice ban- ner which included councillors not part of the team. I am deeply honoured, delighted and, I have to admit, somewhat daunted to be selected to chair the Kaipatiki Local Board at the inception of this new and exciting period,'' Ms Waugh said. She thanked Auckland mayor Len Brown who visited the board at its first meeting. She also acknowledged former Birkenhead-Northcote Community Board chairwoman Jennifer Yorke for her years of knowledge and hard work. Long-term plans for transport Chris Darby Long-term public transport plans need to be made to ensure Takapuna stays a central hub of Auckland, newly elected Devonport- Takapuna Local Board chairman Chris Darby says. Mr Darby says a possible under- ground railway sta- tion could be situ- ated underneath the proposed Merge Development in Takapuna. I'm not saying this will happen in 10 years or even 15 but that is a failing of Auckland, we never plan long term then end up boxing ourselves out,'' he says. The Merge Devel- opment was granted resource consent by North Shore City Council. Mr Darby says the building devel- opment is on the back-burner'' at the moment but the investor is in touch with the new Auck- land Council. Another issue on the agenda Mr Darby wants to make headway with is a new harbour crossing. Hesaysitisan issue that affects all people living north of the bridge. One of the issues the Auckland Coun- cil did not consider is connecting with the local communi- ty, Mr Darby says. Connecting with residents and lis- tening to their issues will be one of his main priorities as chairman. The deputy chair- man on the board is Kevin Schwass. Other members are Joseph Bergin, Jan O'Connor, Mike Cohen and Dianne Hale. The Devonport/ Takapuna Local Board will be meet- ing twice monthly at the old council chamber in Taka- puna. The next meeting for the local board will be on December 15 at 5pm.
