The standard hearing aid set-up is based around your ability to hear steady signals such as arti- ficial tones and noise. Applied Hearing audiologist Alan Ferguson says speech map- ping goes one step further by feed- ing in dynamic signals such as speech -- for example your spouse s voice -- or random speech noise through loudspeakers. The results measured by a tiny probe microphone by the eardrum are displayed on a computer screen to let you see what is being heard, and how the hearing aids are matching the target. If you still have some difficulty or discomfort understanding speech -- even if your aids were fitted years ago -- this technique will reprogramme your aids to address this, he says. That s bet- ter than leaving them gathering dust in the drawer, and at a frac- tion of the cost of new instru- ments. Studies so far suggest that this assessment of your hearing aid s performance can be more accu- rate, and lead to better treatment and outcomes. This is because: An accurate first-time fitting goes a long way towards long-term hearing aid satisfaction. You and your family become part of the verification process that lets you see what is being heard, and how the special features of the aid are working. If your hearing aid can provide only limited speech audibility, this limitation can also be demonstrated. Better programming of the hear- ing aid results in making speech clearer, while avoiding loudness discomfort. The speech mapping process takes about 45 minutes, including a new hearing test. The result is much better speech perception with your aids, and some amazing information that will help you understand how your aid works. Speech mapping is available at Applied Hearing s clinics at Taka- puna (Byron Chambers), Red Beach (Shorecare Medical Centre) and Remuera. Bringing along this article will save you another $10 off the speech mapping cost of $140 per aid. Remember to bring along someone whom you regu- larly speak with, either a family member or friend because they too, can participate.
