Photo: BEN WATSON By IMOGEN NEALE Mayor Len Brown knows how important it is to have family around when you re critically ill. He suffered a massive heart attack onstage at a public event in 2008 and his wife Shan Inglis was diagnosed with throat cancer earlier this year. Both have also spent days and nights sitting by hospital beds, watching over their daughters. So Mr Brown nodded knowingly as Ronald McDonald House chief executive Wayne Howett showed him around the organisation s newest home away from home for patients and their families. My family stayed 24/7 with me for about two weeks, Mr Brown says. I ve been there -- I ve seen how important it is for families to be together. And when you re a child things are magnified. The ability to stay in hospital or close at hand is critical to a child s wellbeing. The multi-storey building down the road from Starship children s hospital will boast 18 family rooms and a managers unit when refur- bishments are complete Rooms will vary in size and lay- out according to a family s needs. One will be completed thanks to $60,000 raised by participants in the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays fun run earlier this year. Families staying in the house will also have access to a full scale communal kitchen, playground and barbecue area. Naturally parents want to be at the side of their child in hospital, but many out of town parents can t afford the accommodation costs, Mr Howett says. Being able to provide a place to stay free, right by the hospital, takes some of the stress out of what is a very heart-wrenching time. Such a facility isn t cheap and Mr Howett says funding is one of the greatest challenges facing Ronald McDonald House. The new building cost around $4.5 million to buy, $2.5m to refur- bish and will have an annual oper- ating budget of $1.5m. This is why cheques like the one from Fairfax Media and the Ports of Auckland are so warmly received. Ronald McDonald House would like to say a big thank you to Fair- fax Media and the Ports of Auck- land Round the Bays for generously giving these proceeds from this year s run. Fairfax Media chief executive Allen Williams says it s wonderful that more than 70,000 people have contributed to the family room through Round the Bays. It s so fitting that so many people have helped to make this room hap- pen because the room will benefit many New Zealand families, he says.
