On Halloween night teenagers knocked on doors at 9pm and threw eggs when they didn t get what they wanted. A woman, who didn t want to be named, says it was far too late to be doorknocking and they appeared to be quite old to be still trick or treating. When they were turned away, they threw an egg on her driveway and a neighbour s roof was pelted with eggs. Nearby shops were also targeted. The key to wedded bliss By MICHELLE ROBINSON Lovebirds: Vic Francis and his wife Fran have been married for 27 years. They are helping other couples to make a good start to marriage. Photo: BEN WATSON FORGET how much your big day costs -- it s the relation- ship that counts. That s the word from Shore Vineyard Churches pastor Viv Francis to people plan- ning their nuptials. He says an overly commercialised, Hollywood approach to mar- riage is leaving many couples under-prepared for the long haul. Wedding days are wonder- ful, magical and memorable and should be treasured for- ever, he says. But if we spend our energy on our wedding we may be short-changing ourselves for the bigger adventure of actu- ally being married. Around 21,600 marriages took place last year while another 8700 were dissolved. The average wedding today costs about $30,000 according to New Zealand Weddings. Couples have a huge advantage if they actually put some focus on their future as a married couple first, Mr Francis says. One way to do this is attend a pre-marriage course many churches run, he says. So he is inviting couples to share in the church s teach- ing series Hearts and Lives. It incorporates biblical guidelines for developing great relationships, exploring topics like friendship, dating, love, marriage, death and divorce. People often say that com- munication is the number one issue that leads to divorce, Mr Francis says. So it is great to help a couple learn how to communi- cate, express their love to their partner and blend two lives into one. Money, life goals and inti- macy are also covered. We prepare for our careers, our sports aspirations, our holidays, Mr Francis says. But often we do little or no preparation for what s really important, those vital relationships which make life what it is meant to be. The teachings in the pre- marital series are also valu- able for other relationships. Many of the qualities that help towards a good marriage can also contribute to making good relationships in the home, the workplace and among friends. People generally don t get enough input on how to be a good friend, what love really isorwhattodowhena relationship goes wrong, he says. The Hearts and Lives series will be held during both Shore Vineyards Sunday services -- at North- cote College at 10am and Bayswater School at 5pm and runs for four weeks.
