PHOTO: EMILY FORD/FAIRFAX NZ Fresh food for those in need EMILY FORD Putting garden produce on people’s tables is part of Yelena Bebich’s mission. The 31-year-old mother is the force behind Good Earth Collective, an initiative that delivers home-grown vegetables to needy families each week. It started with a simple Facebook post. Bebich put a call out to see if anyone could benefit from extras picked out of her garden. The Northcote resident soon found there were plenty of people in need. She decided to go bigger. It has now been one year since she established Good Earth Collective, a Facebook page and blog. ‘‘This whole thing has impac- ted me. It has been really eye opening that there are people quite close to home who do need some assistance,’’ Bebich says. ‘‘I’m just a girl who loves gardening and I love sharing what I have.’’ Run by Bebich and her sister, Tereza Bebich, the pair deliver vegetable boxes every week to families and charitable organisations. It relies on fresh fruit and vegetables from Bebich’s garden, as well as regular donations from 10 growers – friends who put their hands up to help when she had extra seedlings. People from all over Auckland are nominated weekly and Bebich chooses them on a first come, first served basis. She doesn’t need to hear people’s life story and doesn’t want to judge anyone’s situation, she is simply providing people with home grown produce. It’s been great getting to know her community, she says. Northcote’s De Paul House, which provides emergency housing and support to homeless families, is a benefactor of Good Earth Collective. The collective delivers fresh produce to the De Paul House to distribute to families and also helped plant fruit trees at the house. Administration team leader Lauren Walker says it’s fantastic for families to get healthy food straight from the garden. Bebich welcomes hearing from anyone who wants to help.
